Nobody clicks on AdWords ads, right?

Wrong! For keywords with ‘high commercial intent’ (i.e. when someone’s looking to buy something online), almost two thirds of clicks go to AdWords results rather than organic results*. And on average, the top 3 positions on Google (including ads and organic results) get over 40% of the clicks - so it definitely pays to be in the top 3!
